The Education Specialist Program is designed primarily for practitioners in the field who are interested in assuming literacy leadership and curriculum positions within school buildings, school districts, or community agencies and groups. This certificate program consists of a minimum of 30 credit hours of advanced work beyond the master's degree. Additionally, for those who already hold a master's degree, the K-12 Reading Endorsement can be achieved through this program. Courses constituting the major are determined by the major advisor.
There is no single set educational standards for this certificate. For those students whose goal is attainment of the K-12 Reading Specialist Endorsement, the Michigan Department of Education standards for the K-12 Reading Specialist Endorsement (BR) and the International Reading Association Standards for Reading Professionals apply. For those whose goal is to enter the Ed.D. in RLL program, the IRA Standards for Reading Professionals and the NCTE Standards for the English Language Arts used.
