Generations with Promise Grant, - Generation With Promise (GWP) is in its second year of the three year implementation cycle. GWP is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), the Michigan Fitness Foundation, the Michigan Department of Education, Wayne State University, and the University of Michigan. This partnership links Governor Jennifer Granholm’s Cities of Promise with MDCH’s Michigan Steps Up in an effort to empower middle school youth in underserved communities across Michigan to utilize schools as vehicles for youth health improvement in the areas of policy, environmental, and behavior change. The project is generously funded through a $5,000,000 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and is spearheaded by Dr. Kimberlydawn Wisdom, Michigan’s Surgeon General.more ...

Research Projects Relating to Obesity - Dr. Bo Shen is leading a project to investigate urban adolescent females’ intentions and actual participation in elective physical education. The specific aims are threefold: (a) To what extent is urban female adolescents’ overall physical activity associated with participation in elective physical education; (b) Identify the primary factors that influence urban adolescent females’ intentions and enrollment in elective physical education; (c) To what extent can urban female adolescents’ motivational experiences in mandatory school physical education influence their subsequent elective physical education enrollment status. NIH Grant on Sleep and Exercise Research - The Interdisciplinary Research Team of Jean E. Davis, PhD RN from the WSU College of Nursing, Hermann-J. Engels, PhD, FACSM from the WSU College of Education, and Safwan Badr, MD from the WSU School of Medicine, are continuing the study the effects of a regular aerobic exercise program on the disrupted sleep patterns of postmenopausal women who are estrogen deficient.  more...

Detroit Health Youth Initiative - is an educational partnership betweeen Wayne State University, Detroit Public Schools and the Michigan Fitness Foundations.  This partnership is supported by an $868,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.  Spearheaded by Dr. Nate McCaughtry, the goal of the initiative is to increase the health of Detroit youth by improving the quality of school physical eduation programs.  The Initiative is now completing the middle school physical education project. more..

The Sports Administration program continually seeks to better serve KHS students. In aligning with the Wayne State mission as a research institution, faculty have established area specialty experts in the areas of teaching, service and research. Motor Behavior Research -  Dr. Qin Lai is leading students, Demetra Panayiotou and Ronny Benedict, on two research projects in Motor Behavior Lab.  They use an innovative technique to connect a stabiliometer with a Biopac MP100 system to collect real-time balance data in order to determine the relationship between stress level and postural control.  The second project is to investigate whether the neuron muscular adaptation plays a role in the execution of motor program.  Both research projects will be presented be presented at the annual conference of North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.  In addition, Dr. Lai is working with Shandong University in China in search of the effects of obesity on balance. more...

The Exercise Physiology Laboratory facilities are located in the Eugene Applebaum Pharmacy and Health Sciences Building. They consist of a general research/teaching laboratory (Room 1225), a state-of-the-art underwater weighing facility, and a biochemical analysis room.  more...

The Sleep Research Laboratory is housed within the Sleep Disorders Center at Hutzel Hospital, a medical facility located on the WSU medical campus that specializes in clinical diagnostic services and treatment of patients with sleep-related disorders. It consists of several comfortable, individual hotel room-like bed stations and a fully integrated sleep diagnostic patient monitoring control room. more...

A Satellite Exercise Physiology Laboratory has been established in the Recruitment and Clinical Measures Core of the Wayne State University (WSU) Center for Urban and African American Health, which is an NIH funded program consisting of a number of research projects and core facilities, with participation of 34 investigators from various Departments, Centers, and Programs across the WSU campus. more...
