STUDENT AWARDS

  • American Association for Health Education (AAHE) Health Education "Major of the Year" Award.
  • Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) Student Honor Award

Each year universities offering undergraduate majors in Health may identify outstanding students for recognition by the AAHE, the National Convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and by the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD) at their state convention. Each fall students will be nominated by full-time faculty teaching in the undergraduate Health program. The criteria developed by the Undergraduate Health Committee to select the award recipients is as follows:

Criteria:

  1. Academic: A minimum grade point average of 3.5 in the major and 3.2 overall, with 30 semester hours of Health Education and Education courses completed at Wayne State University. Resilient credit hours will include course credits registered for during the term of nomination.
  2. Professional: Students will be judged on the depth and breadth of their professional involvement in activities, such as:
    1. Attendance workshops, conferences and conventions.
    2. Membership in campus organizations.
    3. Volunteer work with organizations such as Special Olympics.
    4. Working in a field related to physical education, such as coaching an athletic team, working at a health spa or gym, teaching at a YM/YWCA, or working at a recreation department.
    5. Providing leadership in local and state professional organizations.
  3. Students must be members of the respective state or national association to receive the award.
  4. MAHPERD student honor award recipients must be seniors during the term in which they receive the award.
  5. Students who have won the AAHE "Major of the Year" award continue to be eligible for the award nomination in subsequent years. However in committee deliberation special emphasis will be placed on those achievements which occurred after the award was granted.
