The Health Education Program at Wayne State University is committed to excellence in the preparation of professional school health educators. The program utilizes a variety of sources and a philosophy of health education to develop its knowledge base, goals, and objectives.
Why Major in Health Education?
Employment prospects are excellent for health education instructors. Health care has become one of the largest employment areas in America. Many of these health industry workers need on-going training due to rapid advances in health care technology and health services. Health education teachers are vital to ensuring that health care positions are filled by knowledgeable and well-trained health education professionals.
Goals of the Program
The general goal of the undergraduate Teacher Certification Track is to prepare teachers for careers in schools.
Specific goals for the teacher certification track are that students will:
- Comprehend and apply health concepts and skills, theories and models of behavior change and principles of health promotion
- Demonstrate the ability to assess individual and group needs for school-based health education
- Demonstrate the ability to plan effective school-based health education programs based on a continuous learning cycle
- Demonstrate the ability to implement health education programs based on a continuous learning cycle
- Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of school-based health education
- Collaborate with others to implement a coordinated school health program
- Act as a resource person to others regarding healthy development
- Advocate and communicate for child health and health education needs, concerns and resources
- Teacher practices reflectively, seeking opportunities to grow professionally

WSU College of Education is offering FREE workshops to review the essential content, problem-solving skills, and test-taking strategies you need to help you be successful in preparing for your test.
