Advisors

Each student admitted to the College at the undergraduate level and seeking a degree is assigned to a faculty member who acts as the advisor.  The advisor guides the student in the selection of courses and counsels the student in solving academic problems.

ACADEMIC ADVISING

Faculty of the Division are available for academic advising in the major and minor. Advisors are assigned to students by the Kinesiology Department Office, 265 Matthaei. When consultation with the faculty advisor is desired, students are expected to assume the initiative in arranging for an appointment in Room 265 Matthaei, or to call (313) 577-4265.

For program authorization, appointments should be made not less than one week prior to the date of registration. Students should review their Plan of Work each semester with their advisor.

The normal student full-time undergraduate load is 15-17 semester hours. Approval of the advisor and authorization by the Head of the Division of Student Services (College of Education) must be secured in order to carry more than eighteen credit hours within a full semester. Students who are working should reduce their class load.

Students must complete a contract before they may enroll in all Division offerings that are individually arranged (KIN 2560, KIN 4350, KIN 5430). Consent of both: 1) the faculty member responsible for supervising the work and 2) the Program Coordinator must be obtained. Planning for individually arranged courses must be made prior to registration. The secretary in Room 265 Matthaei will do overrides at your advisor’s request so that you may register yourself for these courses.

REGISTRATION AND PROGRAM PLANNING

Students are expected to assume major responsibility for program planning and registration. Procedures for each semester are:

  1. Consult Plan of Work and Course Rotation Schedule to determine alternative courses that could be taken during the forthcoming semester. Course prerequisites, general progress toward graduation, and student teaching requirements should be taken into consideration when planning a schedule.
  2. Make an appointment with a Kinesiology advisor at least one week prior to registration.
  3. Complete registration procedure as explained in the Schedule of Classes.
