Collaborative Policy Research

The Detroit Education Research Partnership is a collaboration between researchers at Wayne State University's College of Education and a constellation of community partners interested in improving Detroit schools. We orient our work around the pressing policy needs of the Detroit education community, and we seek to inform improvement in the school experiences of Detroit youth.

We believe that education reform in other places has important lessons for our collective work in Detroit, but that any solution for Detroit will have to respond to the unique strengths and needs of our community. Oriented around the principles of continuous improvement, we work in partnership with schools, community organizations, and policymakers to identify the key problems that impede improvement in Detroit schools. We then collaboratively determine what stakeholders need to know to solve those problems and design research studies to collect, interpret, and disseminate that information to the audiences that need it most.

Inaugural Report: Student Exit, Mobility, and Attendance in Detroit

This report provides an overview of student exit, mobility, and absenteeism in Detroit. It answers the questions: What factors affect the odds that students leave the city for school, switch schools, or miss 10% or more school days? How do the conditions in residential and school neighborhoods relate to student outcomes? What else do policymakers, educators, and families need to know in order to affect positive policy change?

Who We Are

Sarah Winchell Lenhoff is an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies and the principal investigator for the Detroit Education Research Partnership.

Ben Pogodzinski is an associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies and the co-investigator for the Detroit Education Research Partnership.

Erica Edwards is an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies and research faculty with the Detroit Education Research Partnership.

Jeremy Singer is a Ph.D. student in educational leadership and policy studies and a research assistant with the Detroit Education Research Partnership.

Walt Cook is a research assistant at the Detroit Education Research Partnership.
