Message From the Dean

Dean Anita Welch

Welcome to the College of Education at Wayne State University.  As Dean, I am honored to join its diverse community of distinguished students, scholars, and staff who share my commitment to Wayne State's vision of being a pre-eminent, public, urban research university known for academic and research excellence, success across a diverse student body, and meaningful engagement in its urban community.

It's an exciting time to be at Wayne State—not only because of Detroit's renewed energy but also because of the university's strategic growth. As a Carnegie Foundation "Research One" institution, Wayne State enables students to work alongside world-renowned scholars in a wide range of disciplines. It does so in a diverse and dynamic urban setting, which enhances the educational experience and provides unparalleled access to cultural, professional, entrepreneurial, and service opportunities.

Located in vibrant Mid-Town Detroit, our urban environment reflects both the problems and opportunities of education in their most intense and concentrated form. Our educational preparation and research laboratory are Metropolitan Detroit —providing unlimited opportunities for study with a diverse student body at a major research university in an urban setting that provides exposure to a microcosm of our world; you will be prepared for success anywhere. Our students learn in the classroom and in the community.

We are proud of the education our students receive, with its emphasis on diversity, innovation, technology and research-based practices. Our professors are leaders in their fields who pride themselves on their quality programs, high standards, and dedication to students. Our programs are either accredited through their national professional organizations or approved by the Michigan Department of Education.

I am delighted to welcome you to our website, and as you explore it, you will find our commitment to excellence reflected in a range of initiatives and services that have been thoughtfully integrated to support the success of a diverse body of undergraduate, master's and doctoral students.
