Typically the difference between the two degrees is:

  • Ed.D. is more application oriented; and
  • Ph.D. more theory oriented.

In essence, the distinction between the two degrees relates to the extent to which the programs emphasize the development of specialized practitioner skills is in the Ed.D. program or research in theoretical foundations of the field is done in the Ph.D. program.
