Elementary Master of Arts Curriculum

Students admitted to the Master of Arts in Teaching Program will complete a minimum of 42 credits (including methodology, pre-student teaching, and student teaching). The courses required for the Michigan Elementary Teaching Certificate include:

  • BBE 5000 - Multicultural Education in Urban America 2 Cr.
  • EDP 6210 - Foundations of Educational Psychology 3 Cr.
  • ELE 6200 - Children’s Literature for New & Prospective Teachers 3 Cr.
  • ELE 6290 - Language Arts Instruction: Preprimary – 9 3 Cr.
  • ELE 6310 - Reading Instruction: Preprimary – 9 3 Cr.
  • ELE 6390 - Mathematics Instruction: Preprimary – 9 3 Cr.
  • ELE 6500 - Science Curriculum: Preprimary – 9 3 Cr.
  • ELE 6600 - Social Studies Curriculum: Preprimary – 9 3 Cr.
  • RLL 6120 - Reading in the Content Areas* 3 Cr.
  • SED 7050 - Inclusive Teaching 2 Cr.
  • TED 5150 - Analysis of Elementary School Teaching** 6 Cr.
  • TED 5780 - Directed Teaching and Conference (primary grades) 8, 10 or 12 Cr.

Total Credits: 42

Note:

  • *ELE 6310 is a pre-requisite for RLL 6120.
  • **ELE 6310 and a methods course are pre-requisites for TED 5150 (see advisor).

Additional Requirements for M.A.T. Degree (5 credits)

  • EHP 7600 - Philosophy of Education 2 Cr.
  • ED 7999 - Terminal Master's Seminar Project (Early Childhood Education section) 3 Cr.

Total semester hours will exceed 47 for students in the Early Childhood and Special Education Programs or for those with a major or minor in a World Language and/or a minor in BBE or ESL.
