Master of Arts in Teaching - Elementary

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in a non-education program with appropriate teaching majors and minors, and who desire both a master’s degree and Michigan Provisional Teaching Certification at the elementary level.  Teaching certification can be earned prior to completion of the master’s degree requirements.  The MAT program consists of graduate level courses (several involving students in elementary school settings) and a pre-student teaching and student teaching experience.

Student in the Bilingual/Bicultural program will receive teacher certification at two levels:

  1. The Elementary (Kindergarten-Grade 5 and Grades 6-8) in a self-contained classroom and may include one or more certificate endorsements or authorizations to teaching grade 6 to 8 in departmentalized classrooms; or
  2. The Secondary Certificate (Grades 6 to 12) in subject area endorsements on the teaching certificate.

At the elementary level, students will have:

  1. A comprehensive major (45 credits) that provides depth and balance across content standards in: integrated  science, mathematics, social studies, language arts, health, physical education and the arts.
  2. One world language major or minor or student-centered minor (English as a Second Language, Bilingual Education).

At the completion of the program students will receive a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, an elementary teaching certificate and additional endorsements that have been part of their program (e.g., Bilingual Endorsement, ESL Endorsement).

Upon completion of all requirements Wayne State University will recommend the student to the Michigan Department of Education for the Elementary Provisional Teaching Certificate.
