Language Proficiency Requirement

Completion of the French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish teaching major courses is not sufficient for a provisional secondary teaching certificate in a foreign language.  You must score at the Advanced Low Level in French, German, Italian and Spanish, and at the Intermediate High Level in Russian, as measured by the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) prior to admission to this program. You should also pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in the appropriate major and minor subject areas prior to student teaching.

Language Proficiency Requirement

Completion of the Bilingual-Bicultural Education minor courses is not sufficient for teacher certification and bilingual endorsement. You must score at the Superior Level in (French, German, Greek, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Hebrew, Arabic, Vietnamese, Korean, Servo-Croatian/Bosnian, Chaldean, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, and any Other Language) as measured by the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in the appropriate major and minor subject areas and in bilingual (Y__) prior to student teaching.  Students must show language proficiency in English as measured by The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills Test.

Candidates must document experience learning a second language in order to gain an understanding and appreciation for the processes of learning an additional language.
