Master of Arts in Teaching - Secondary

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in a non-education program with appropriate teaching majors and minors, and who desire both a master’s degree and Michigan Provisional Teaching Certification at the secondary level.  Teaching certification can be earned prior to completion of the master’s degree requirements.  The MAT program consists of graduate level courses (several involving students in secondary school settings) and a pre-student teaching and student teaching experience.

The following options are open to students pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching --  Secondary (See Plans of Work): 

  • MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING - with major in:

Secondary Education - with  concentration in:

Foreign Language Education

Teaching Major:  French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish

  • MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING - with major in:

Secondary Education - with  concentration in:

Foreign Language Education

Teaching Major:  Chinese Language and Culture

  • MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING with major and minor in:

Secondary Education - with concentration in

Subject Area Major

Bilingual-Bicultural Education Minor

English as a Second Language Minor

At the completion of their program students will receive a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, a secondary teaching certificate and additional endorsements that have been part of their program.

Upon completion of all requirements Wayne State University will recommend the student to the Michigan Department of Education for the Secondary Provisional Teaching Certificate.
