Master of Arts (M.A.)
The Master of Arts degree program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) and provides a strong theoretical and clinical foundation in the practice of disability and personal adjustment counseling, career counseling, psychosocial and vocational assessment, job development and placement, supported employment, and community inclusion for persons with disabilities. WSU Rehabilitation Counseling Program is a 60 credit program and offers specialized training in the areas of trauma, psychiatric disabilities, dual diagnosis disorders, as well as therapeutic interventions in the areas of hope and positive psychology, motivational interviewing and narrative therapy.
The following value statements are the foundation of the attitudes, knowledge, and skills taught in all Rehabilitation Counseling degree program courses.
- Persons with disabilities should be fully included, accepted and valued in the typical life of the community.
- The community must take responsibility to accept and accommodate persons with disabilities and help remove physical, social, and emotional barriers, which inhibit or block individuals with disabilities feeling a part of and being included in community activities.
- Persons with disabilities have the responsibility to learn, adjust, and contribute to the community.
- Persons with disabilities have the right and capacity for choice, self-determination, and self-advocacy.
- Interpersonal relationships and networks of support between persons with disabilities and community members are central to quality of life and contributions to the community.
- Persons with disabilities have the same right as others to lead lives which are productive both occupationally and socially, to live with dignity and respect, and to value themselves and their existence.
The goals of this multi-faceted, interdisciplinary, and competency-based concentration are to:
- Increase the number of qualified, reflective, and innovative rehabilitation professionals who are committed to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
- Graduate culturally competent rehabilitation professionals who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide leadership in the provision of rehabilitation counseling services based on best practices.
- Enhance the quality of services and optimally the quality of life of individuals with disabilities and their families in partnership with rehabilitation constituencies.
- Contribute to the body of knowledge related to rehabilitation counseling and community inclusion.
- Promote a holistic, interdisciplinary and competency-based approach to rehabilitation.
The mission of the program is to:
- Provide an effective model of rehabilitation graduate education in partnership with rehabilitation constituencies to promote quality rehabilitation services.
- Prepare qualified, reflective, and innovative rehabilitation professionals who are able to competently work with individuals with disabilities and their families, regardless of the type or severity of disability, or of ethnic, racial or cultural identity.
- Promote the empowerment, self-determination, economic self-sufficiency, independence, and inclusion in community life of individuals with disabilities.
- Prepare graduates who clearly and enthusiastically identify themselvesas members of the profession of rehabilitation counselingand who are committed to supporting and advancing the field as well as their individual careers through dedicated service and professional conduct.
