Admission Requirements
Admission to this degree program is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School. Program admission requirements also include:
- three letters of recommendation
- a personal interview with an admission committee
- a type written autobiographical statement reflecting personal and professional history and clear, concise rationale for seeking admittance to the masters program in Rehabilitation Counseling

To qualify for admission, applicants must have a bachelor degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university and adequate preparation and ability to pursue graduate study in the area of rehabilitation counseling. Regular admission may be recommended if the applicant's honor point average (HPA) is a “B” (3.0) or above for the undergraduate course work. However, students whose GPA is between 2.75 to 2.99 could be admitted on a probationary basis.
The prospective student should recognize that a rehabilitation counseling concentration involves both course requirements and clinical experience in community rehabilitation settings. Evaluation of a student’s performance is continuous. Retention in the degree program and recommendation for credentialing depends upon demonstrated clinical skills as well as academic achievement. Requirements for the Master of Arts degree must be completed within six (6) years after admission to the program.
Admission Committee Interview
Upon receipt of the application, the Rehabilitation Counseling Education program will notify applicants of the dates for the admission committee screening interviews. At the time of the admission committee screening interview, all applicants will be asked to write a very brief response to a question related to the rehabilitation counseling field using guidelines that will be provided at that time. Students are officially notified of admission decisions by the Office of Graduate Admissions after completion of the interviewand a decision by the Rehabilitation Counseling program faculty.
Graduate School Admission Procedures
Applicants not previously enrolled at Wayne State University Graduate School are required to submit an "Application for Graduate Admission" form and official transcripts from each college or university attended to the Office of Graduate Admissions, Wayne State University, The Welcome Center, 4th Floor, 42 W. Warren, Detroit, MI 48202, (313)577-3577. Students who have previously been accepted to the Graduate Division should present their application directly to the Graduate Education Office, College of Education, Room 489. Students admitted initially to the Graduate School in a different major must complete a "Change of Status" form in order for their application to be considered. This can be accomplished by filling out the proper form in Room 489, College of Education. Students may also complete an on-line application at the following web address: http://www.apply.wayne.edu
Application Dates
The University Office of Admissions will make every effort to process applications in time for the semester of the applicant's choice. Applications are reviewed by the Office of Graduate Education, College of Education, to insure that they are complete and are then forwarded to the Rehabilitation Counseling program for consideration. Only those applications which are received by the Graduate Education Office by the application deadline noted below will be reviewed for the approaching semester. Late applications will be considered for the next semester's class.
