Initiative for Self-Determination and Transition

The Initiative for Self-Determination and Transition was established to conduct research and development related to strategies that help people successfully transition from one life situation to another. Our work started in the l990’s with funding from the U.S. Department of Education. We set out to determine the factors that help students succeed when they encounter major life transitions. We learned that a sense of self-determination during transition—the ability to define what you want, why you want it, and taking action to obtain it—is an important key to success. Throughout the past 23 years, we have continued to conduct research on the effectiveness of a variety of strategies to promote self-determination and have developed models, curricula and strategies that are used in schools throughout the country to promote self-determination. Additional information is available throughout this website.
