Biography

Dr. Ilmer was appointed Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the WSU College of Education in 1991. In 2007 he served as acting dean for seven months and as interim dean during the 2010-11 academic year.  Prior to his appointment at WSU, Dr. Ilmer served as Professor and founding Chair of the Department of Counseling and Special Education, College of Education, Central Michigan University; Professor (and Associate Professor prior) and Coordinator, Graduate Program in Special Education, Department of Advanced Studies, School of Education, California State University, Fresno; and Assistant Professor, Special Education Program, Department of Psychoeducational Studies, University of Minnesota. Dr. Ilmer also worked as a special education teacher in the Chicago Public schools.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include working in special education teacher preparation, research in urban education, and university and college service.

Academic Interests

Teacher preparation in special education, program evaluation and alternative pathways to teacher certification.

Area Of Expertise

General special education needs and project management in urban school improvement.

Research Interests

School improvement in special education and regular/general education; and evaluation of programs in PreK-12 urban schools.
