Endorsement Program in Adapted Physical Education
Teacher of Physical Education for Students with Disabilities
This state approved program leads to endorsement as a “teacher of physical education for students with disabilities” (SP endorsement). The program requires a minimum of 24 credit hours: 12 credits in approved special education courses and 12 credits in adapted physical education (kinesiology) courses.
Requirements for the adapted physical education endorsement can be completed as a stand alone (post-bachelor’s) endorsement or as a part of a Master of Education (M.Ed) in Kinesiology - Physical Education Pedagogy. As such, physical educators who wish to earn their masters degree can also earn an endorsement in Adapted Physical Education as part of their graduate studies.
In order to better serve the needs of Michigan physical educators and to be consistent with the requirements of the State of Michigan, the Adapted Physical Education (APE) Endorsement Program is undergoing a revision process. Under the direction of Dr. Suzanna Rocco Dillon, and with assistance from Dave Potter, Wayne State University is developing its APE Education Endorsement Program into a 24-credit, web-enhanced program.
Program courses include online components as well as field experiences in the community. New features for courses include the use of WIMBA to enhance the online educational experience; APE experts and practitioners from across the United States participating in online discussions with WSU students about current issues in APE; and expanded off-campus practicum experiences. The latter can include opportunities with elite-level disability sports and summer camps for individuals with disabilities such as Camp Abilities. Students in the APE endorsement program will also be able to collaborate on APE projects and research being conducted by Dr. Dillon and her APE colleagues from across the United States.
