Kinesiology and Pedagogy

Welcome

The general goal of the undergraduate Kinesiology Pedagogy Track is to prepare teachers for careers in schools. Specific goals for the pedagogy track are that students will demonstrate skill and knowledge of a variety of movement activities including fundamental motor skills, dance, fitness, adventure, and sports education; apply knowledge about human movement from the different subdisciplines to the teaching of physical education; analyze and evaluate human motor performance of individuals in various age groups and skill levels and evaluate and reflect on one's own teaching performance using systematic techniques; and plan, implement, and manage effective lessons.

The Master of Education Degree in Physical Education, Pedagogy is designed to meet the needs of state certified teachers wishing to continue an in-depth study of physical education pedagogy including the study of teaching, teacher education, and curriculum for academic and/or professional careers in physical education pedagogy. Another emphasis is designed to provide both a theoretical and practical background for the teacher, coach, or administrator of physical education and sports programs in schools at the elementary or secondary level.

Wayne State University is the major urban Carnegie Research University I institution in Michigan. The campus is located in the heart of Detroit's Cultural Center and includes a comprehensive medical school. Consistent with its urban mission, the University utilizes the city's vast cultural, social, and scientific resources to stimulate research. Faculty members in Kinesiology, Health, and Sport Studies have active research agendas in which students are expected to participate and have many professional contacts within the University and community which assist students seeking internships and/or employment. Assistantships and financial aid are available.

It is urgent that all students in PE Teacher Certification Programs review the new Statement of Student Requirements before the end of the WInter 2010 term and contact their individual advisers in Kinesiology/Pedagogy before May 15th if they have any questions.
