Clinical Partnerships and Practice
The College of Education's Office of Clinical Experiences (OCE) strives for teaching internships that develop, sustain, and leverage communities of practice at the cohort and classroom levels. Teaching interns serve in paired intern placements to co-teach with their Mentor Teacher. Each teaching triad is supported by a WSU Clinical Instructional Coach and OCE in developing as a community of learners that engages in co-teaching as an authentic context for:
- Shared inquiry into practice;
- Scaffolded professional learning;
- Joint productive activities as opportunities for constructing professional knowledge, dispositions, and skills; and
- Collaboratively meeting the needs of diverse learners in classrooms. Paired internships and the co-teaching model were piloted with great success in 2014 in Dearborn Public Schools. This model has been expanded to include placements in other partner districts including Detroit Public Schools Community District, Ferndale Public Schools, University Prep Schools, Van Dyke Community Schools, and New Paradigm for Education.
