Message From the Dean
Greetings and welcome to the Wayne State College of Education. It's my privilege to serve as the dean of this remarkable College.
Education in our College includes all the disciplines we embrace, from the preparation of classroom teachers, early childhood specialists, counselors and school psychologists, art therapists, rehabilitation therapists, educational evaluation & research, educational leadership and policy studies, learning design and technology, and kinesiology, heath & sports studies.
Located in vibrant Mid-Town Detroit, our urban environment reflects both the problems and opportunities of education in their most intense and concentrated form. Our educational preparation and research laboratory is Metropolitan Detroit —providing unlimited opportunities for study with a diverse student body at a major research university in an urban setting that provides exposure to a microcosm of our world; you will be prepared for success anywhere. Our students learn in the classroom and in the community.
The College of Education (COE) began as a teacher's college in 1881. We now offer bachelor's, master's, education specialist and doctoral degree programs in thirty-seven program areas, many of which are award-winning and have received national recognition for their innovative, field-based practices. The college's student body generally consists of around 2,000 undergraduate students and almost as many graduate students. Approximately 40 doctoral degrees (Ph.D and Ed.D) are awarded by the COE each year. Surveys indicate that our teacher certification graduates, averaging 600 per year, are hired soon after graduation and typically remain in the Detroit metropolitan area, although our alumni may be found in many countries.
We are proud of the education our students receive, with its emphasis on diversity, innovation, technology and research-based practices. Our professors are leaders in their fields who pride themselves on their quality programs, high standards, and dedication to students. Our programs are either accredited through their national professional organizations or approved by the Michigan Department of Education.
The faculty and I are committed to ensuring that each of you receives the assistance and support needed to become a leader in the field of education. We believe the partnerships you develop, combined with the strength of the skills and experiences you acquire while you are here will enable you to make a difference. We educate leaders in the field of education. Upon graduation, our students use their training to embrace a professional career in which they initiate, influence, and inspire those around them. No matter what your focus you will be prepared for a rewarding and challenging career with a degree from Wayne State's College of Education.
